Whole Wheat Roti | Sri Lankan Vegan Roti

Whole wheat roti is a simple and nutritious roti recipe that can be made so quickly by anyone.


I'm sure by now you've heard so many types of roti, but have you heard about the Sri Lankan coconut roti?


It is so unique & different from Indian roti or chapati. This soft coconut roti is commonly found in every street corner. It's not a fluffy soft roti. This is about 1/4 inch thick, onion & coconut filled soft roti with a harder utter layer and it is a quick dinner idea for a busy night.



This is a healthy, vegan, and gluten-free alternative for the traditional Sri Lankan roti.

Once you taste this roti, you wouldn't want to go back to the traditional version.

This type of flatbread can be served with any curries and sambals.




Ingredients


1 Cup Whole wheat flour

1/4 Cup Water

1 Cup Grated Coconut

1 Tsp Chili Flakes

1/4 Tsp Onion

1 Tsp Salt

1 Green Chili

3 Tsp Oil


How to Make

  • Chop onion and green chilies into small pieces. 

  • Add all the ingredients into the flour except the water. 

  • Now mix in water gradually until dough is soft and slightly sticky. If it's too sticky add more flour. If it's too dry, add more water.

  • Knead dough until it is smooth, this will take few minutes of kneading. 

  • Divide dough into 6 balls and place on a lightly floured surface. 

  • Flatten each ball into a 1/4-inch thick round roti. Use your hand to flatten. This is the traditional way but you can also use a rolling pin. 

  • Heat a pan over medium heat.

  •  Cook roti for a few minutes until you notice brown spots. 

  •  Flip the other side and cook the same 

  • Enjoy with some side curry or chili paste
